The Javelin is a British made, lightweight, daylight, clear weather, low-level, surface to air missile (SAM). It was in Canadian service from 1990 to 2005.
The Javelin replaced the Blowpipe SAM that was in service from 1975 to 1990. The Javelin could be fired from the shoulder or the lightweight multiple launchers (LML). The Canadian military used it in parachute, airmobile and dismounted operations. The operator aimed and fired the missile, and then used the aiming sight to guide the rocket to the target.
Canadian warships added the Javelin to bolster their ability to deter enemy deployments during the First Gulf War (1990-1991). Gunners from 119 Air Defence Battery used the missile from the shoulder and LML modes.
